A Historical Islamic Project

The revival of Islam in Andalus, Spain, has been a cherished ideal of the Muslims since the fall of Grenada in 1492. The Holocaust coming in the wake of the down-fall of the Muslims was unprecedented in the annals of human history. The Inquisition carried out by the Spanish church in the name of religion undoubtedly tarnished the image of Christianity in the eyes of the impartial observers and students of history. Millions of Muslims were persecuted in the name of Christianity. Hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women and children were massacred, thousands of mosques were closed or demolished and thousands of centres of learning were closed and burnt into ashes.

In spite of this bleak period hundreds of thousands of Muslims retained their religious commitment and strived hard to impart some sentiments of Islamicity to their forth-coming generation. The tale of this heroic struggle is worth-telling not only on account of its historical significance but also because it is a source of inspiration for all crusaders struggling for the freedom of conscience and the protection of their moral values, spiritual precepts and cultural identity.

There has always been a feeling. in the educated class of the Andalusians that their real identity was different from the Northern Spaniards who denied this right to their Southern compatriots. This long feeling found expression in the conversion process started soon after the ending of General Franco's dictatorship. Several thousands of people embraced Islam within a short span of time. These new Muslims included people from all walks of life representing all regions and territories of Andalus. They organized themselves in Yama'a Islamica de AI-Andalus, an organization established in 1980 in Seville, capital of present day Andalusia. A brief history of the performance of this organization is given below in a chronological order.

CHRONOLOGY OF THE YAMA'A ISLAMICA DE AL-ANDALUS.
1980The "Yamaa Islamica de AI-Andalus" (YIA) was established in 1980 in Seville (capital of present-day Andalucia). It was established by a small group of Andalucians who returned to Islam and decided to start a movement for the reIslamization of their people.
1983-1984The YIA opened centers in Granada, Malaga and Jerez.
1984The YIA made its first public demonstration by 'celebrating the memory of AI-Motamid Ibn Abbad, the last Muslim King of Seville. The Municipality of Triana cooperated by making a palace available to the organizers, and the local government (Junta) of Andalucia gave financial support. The act included a public adhan and prayer on the shores of Guadalquivir. More than 4000 people (all Spanish Andalucians) took part. It was a great success.
1985A convention of all Andalucian Muslims was held in Cogollos Vega in the Province of Granada. Hundreds of people took part. A series of lectures was held and Islamic life in its fullness, including the 5 daily prayers, began to be practised.
1986The YIA opened its center in Cordoba and made it the Center of the entire community.
1987-88New centers were established in Almeria and Murcia.
1989The YIA organised the first International Congress of Andalucians in Castellar de
la Frontera. This congress was financed by local authorities of the Province of Cadiz. It was a fully Muslim congress that was highly publicized in TV, radio and the press.
1989Islam was recognized in Spain.
1989The YIA started publishing its magazine of Islamic thought: "LAM ALIF AL-
ANDALUS".
1990The YIA opened a new center in Cabra.
1990The YIA started opposing, in all major cities, the celebration of the fall of each of these cities to the Christians. The effort received much popular support.
1991The town of Casarabonela decided to hold annual celebrations on the occasion of the birthday of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
1991The town of Comares declared the anniversary of the victory of the Muslims over the Christians in the 16th century its yearly festival.
1992The town of Benhadux celebrated the memory of its Muslim ancestors.
1992The town of Valor celebrated the memory of its distinguished son Fernando de Vaior (Muhammad Ibn Umayyah) who led the failed revolution of the Muslim Andalucians against their Christian oppressors in the 16th century.
1993The town of Almonaster restored an old mosque to its original position. This mosque had been forcibly converted earlier into a church. This event was celebrated by starting Friday Prayers, and holding festivities.
1993The YIA started the translation of the meaning of the Holy Qur'ân into Spanish. This work will be published by the Da'wah Academy of the International Islamic University, Islamabad.
1993The YIA started the "Ibn Rushd Islamic University" and the first mosque project in Cordoba.
1993A whole group of Spanish members of a Christian Congregation in the city of
Oviedo embraced Islam, and started a new Center of the YIA in Oviedo.
1994Finally, the construction of the "Ibn Rushd Islamic University" is finished in
August. At the beginning of November took take place its inauguration.

Unfortunately, the "Yama'a Islamica of AI-Andalus" has not been able to pay completely this huge effort "fî sabîl Allâh". Therefore, we are in the urgent need of your generous cash
donation to the final step of the first Islamic University and mosque in Cordoba after seven hundred years, Insha-Allah.

The project of establishing the first ever Islamic University in Spain after the fall of Grenada is undoubtedly a historic event. This project was. started in 1993 with the purchase of a building in the vicinity of the Great Mosque of Cordoba.

The charter has been taken from the Government wich allows the University to start Graduate classes in Arabic Studies and Islamic Studies. The University has been authorized to award Bachelor's Degrees in these two disciplines. The courses of studies adopted and approved are on following lines:

    a) Bachelor's Degree in Arabic Studies.
    1. Arabic Language, Grammar, Literature etc.   50%
    2. Islamic Studies   25%
    3. National curriculum requirements of the Spanish Government.     25%
    b) Bachelor's Degree in Islamic Studies.
    1. Islamic Studies, Quran, Hadith, Sirah etc.   50%
    2. Arabic Language, Grammar etc.  25%
    3. National curriculum' requirements of the Spanish Government.  25%
A Board of Trustees has been constituted to supervise and oversee the working of the University. The Board include men of eminence from different parts of the world. It has been decided that 50% of the Members of the Board will be from the Muslimsof Andalus while the representation of Muslims from Europe will not be 2/3 of the total membership. The remaining 1/3 members will be taken from the rest of the Muslim world. The following persons are some of the Members of the Board of Trustees:

The project of Ibn Rushd Islamic University is now in the hands of the Muslim Ummah. It is upto the brothers and sisters in Islam to decide whether they want this project to take off and prosper or to wither away for lack of funds and resources.

LA UNIVERSIDAD ISLÁMICA
 

La Universidad Islámica Internacional Averroes es un centro de estudios superiores surgido a partir del pleno reconocimiento del Islam por parte del Estado Español en 1989 y de los acuerdos de 1992 entre el Estado y la comunidad musulmana para la creación por ésta de instituciones académicas de nivel universitario.

La Universidad Islámica Internacional Averroes es una institución no vinculada a Estados o grupos de poder. Está presidida por un Patrona- to Internacionalformado por personalidades independientes del mundo científico y académico musulmán. El actual Presidente del Patronato es el Dr. Mothar M'Bow, ex Secretario General de la Unesco.

La Universidad Islámica Internacional Averroestiene establecidos acuerdos de cooperación con diversas instituciones de reconocido prestigio en el mundo académico musulmán y occidental: entre otras, con la Universidad Islámica Internacional de Islamabad (Pakistán), la Un¡versidad del Este del Mediterráneode Chipre y la Uníversidad Al al-Bayt de Jordania.

El objetivo central que anima a la Universidad Islámica Internacional Averroes es el de ser un lugar de encuentro, estudio y conocimiento respetuoso y enriquecedor entre culturas. Un centro donde sea posible para los estudiosos occidentales adentrarse en las claves del Islam y del mundo musulmán sin las tradicionales distorsiones del etnocentrismo europeo.

La Universidad Islámica Internacional Averroesestá abierta a estudiantes de todos los orígenes, creencias y culturas. Su sede central está en la ciudad de Córdoba (Andalucía), lugar que ha constituido un ejemplo universal de convivencia y diálogo entre culturas.
 

NUESTROS ESTUDIOS

La Universidad Islámica Internacional Averroesofrece en la actualidad estudios de licenciatura en Filología Arabe y Ciencias del Islam. Estos se constituyen como estudios de licenciatura con una duración de cuatro años, conformados en lo que respecta a su estructura, duración y número de créditos a la normativa del Estado Español sobre tales estudios; y en cuanto a su configuración, contenidos y asignaturas, al modelo de las otras universidades islámicas del mundo musulmán.

Además, la Universidad organiza un programa de Cursos de extensión universitariadurante el año lectivo (jornadas, congresos, conferencias, cursos monográficos) que se anunciarán puntualmente y que tienen como objetivo divulgar temas de interés más allá del estricto ámbito universitario.

CONTENIDOS DE LOS ESTUDIOS DE
LICENCIATURA EN FILOLOGÍA ARABE
Y CIENCIAS DEL ISLAM

1.er Curso: Los contenidos del primer curso de esta licenciatura,Filología Arabe y Ciencias del Islam, están encaminados hacia el objetivo de dotar al alumnado de conocimientos universales y suficiencia del idioma, que abarcan los siguientes campos: lengua árabe (niveles gramaticales, orales y escritos de árabe clásico y moderno), Islam (estudios del Corán, Hadices, Fiqh y Tawhid) y historia, geografía, pensamiento y literatura árabo-islámica.

2.er Curso: Los contenidos del segundo curso están encaminados hacia el objetivo de profundizar en los contenidos obtenidos a lo largo del primer curso e iniciar al alumnado en el conocimiento de:

A) Dialectos árabes actuales como el magrebí, egipcio y sirio.

B) Otras lenguas y culturas islámicas como la turca, persa y beréber.

Los contenidos de los cursos tercero y cuarto. girarán en torno a tres especialidades:Lingüística árabe, Ciencias del Islam y Estudios Mediterráneos y Andalusíes.
 

ENSEÑANZA A DISTANCIA
 

Nuestra Universidad dispone de un sistema de enseñanza a distancia por correspondencia. La persona interesada recibe los materiales con una periodicidad establecida y tiene la posibilidad de contactar por correo/teléfono con el profesorado. Accede a exámenes que se convocan en determinados lugares y fechas.

MATRICULACIÓN
 

Para matricularse en nuestros estudios se requiere estar en posesión del título de bachiller o equivalente oficial y abonar las correspondientes tasas de matrícula.

  • Estudios de licenciatura (matricula oficial): 250.000 pts/año
  • Estudios de licencuania a distancia: 50.000 pts/año (*)
(*) más gastos de envío.

El pago de las tasas puede hacerse fraccionadamente, debiendo abonarse el último plazo antes del 31 de enero.

El plazo de solicitud e inscripción es desde el mes de mayo al mes dle agosto, ambos inclusive. La matrícula se realizará a partir del momento en que el Claustro Universitario comunique a la persona interesada que su solicitud ha sido admitida.
 

SISTEMA DE BECAS

La Universidad Islámica Irternacional Averroes dispone de un sistema de ayudas económicas a las personas admitidas que lo soliciten.
Las becas son de dos tipos:

Becas de matrícula:Cubren las tasas de matriculación.

Becas de matrícula y estudios: Cubren las tasas de matriculación más una ayuda en metálico niensual.

Las becas no se aplicarán en la enseñanza a distancia. Par optar a una de estas becas la persona interesada deberá aportar la documentación completa que acredite encontrarse en alguna de las situaciones previstas oficialmente para la percepción de becas y ayudas de estudio (Orden Ministerial del 15-06-94, BOE del 24-06~94). Puede solicitarse información más completa en la propia Universidad.

En el caso de recibirse más solicitudes de becas que el número de las mismas disponibles para cada curso, el Claustro Universitario efectuará una adjudición en función de la fecha de solicitud, situación económica y expediente académico.
