Hussayn Kakayi (de naam Kakayi betekent "Broederschap") is afkomstig uit Iraaks Koerdistan (° Kirkoek). Hij is
een academisch opgeleid kunstschilder én, als leerling van meesters als Muhammad
cIzzat al-Karkuki en
cAbd
al-Khalik Shukut, zélf meester-kalligraaf in de verschillende klassieke
stijlen (Arabische, Osmaanse, Perzische...). Hij stelde van 1982 tot
1984 verscheidene malen ten toon in zijn geboorteland (zoals een vriend
vertelt: "hij trok met zijn schilderijen door de bergen van dorp tot dorp, om ze in de moskeeën aan de gewone mensen te tonen").
In 1988 verliet hij Irak. In ballingschap levend in België en al 'n
30 jaar een nieuw-Gentenaar, zet hij zijn artistieke activiteiten
onverdroten verder. Hij wordt regelmatig gevraagd voor
tentoonstellingen over geheel het land. Zo werkte hij o.m. mee aan 'Sluit de stroom niet af', n.a.v. 20 jaar Wereldwijd, 'Koerdische kunstschilders in Europa' in Luik, 'Kunst in Ballingschap' te Gent, 'Kleuren van Kirkoek' in Brussel, 'Spectraal rond het thema Spiegelbeeld' in De Gouden Pluim te Gent, enz. Zijn werk werd geselecteerd voor de Millenium Art Collectie, '2000 redenen om de aarde lief te hebben',
door de Internationale Associatie voor de Verdediging van Kunstenaars,
Nederland. Hij participeeerde ook aan het Project Allochtone Kunstenaars
(samen met Rachid Benissa), in het Gentse Geuzenhuis, in een
gemeenschappelijke organisatie van de Vereniging voor Emancipatie en
Ontwikkeling van Moslims (VOEM) vzw, het Vermeylenfonds en het
Vrijzinnig Laďciserend Centrum Gent. etc.
Meester Kakayi is gehuwd met Avin (betekent "Liefde"), en ze hebben
twee kindjes: Arinja en Yarsan.

kalligrafisch en pictografisch werk (voor een vergroting volstaat het

Hussayn Kakayi (the name Kakayi means "Brotherhood") was born in Kirkuk,
Iraqi Kurdistan. He is a gifted painter as well as a master-calligrapher trained by famous masters (Muhammad cIzzat al-Karkuki and
cAbd
al-Khalik Shukut), in the different styles of classical calligraphy.
During the 80's he held many exhibitions in his country, even in the
smallest villages (as one of his friends told us: "he carried his
pictures through the mountains, from village to village, in order to
show them in the mosques to ordinary people"). He had to leave Iraq
in 1988. Living since in Belgium (city of Ghent, Flanders), he is
continuing unremittingly his artistic activities, taking part in
national and international exhibitions as well. He is married to Avin
(meaning "Love")
and has two children: Arinja and Yarsan.
In two albums you can view some fifty examples of
Kakayi's calligraphic and pictographic work (please click on the
thumbnails for a better view). Of course, the scanned images (often on
the basis of simple photographs) cannot do fully justice to the
colours, splendour and power of the originals.
